“Storage Almost Full.” You know what’s causing it. You also know you’re not deleting the photos, so you’re here looking for a way around the problem.

There is a way around it, and it works better than most articles admit. It also has a ceiling, and nobody ever tells you where the ceiling sits.

Why your storage is full (it’s almost always the camera roll)

Photos and video are the heaviest thing on most phones by a wide margin. One 2025 survey put the typical camera roll at around 1,600 images, with millennials past 2,500. Add a few 4K videos and the arithmetic gets ugly fast.

One confusion ruins most people’s first attempt at fixing this: iCloud storage is not iPhone storage. Two separate pools, two separate limits.

Your iPhone has, say, 128 GB of physical storage soldered into it. Your iCloud account has 5 GB free, or 50 GB, or 2 TB, depending on what you pay Apple. Deleting things from one does not necessarily affect the other. Google Photos and Android work the same way: cloud quota and device storage are unrelated numbers.

Move photos to the cloud (biggest single win, with real caveats)

This is the headline no-delete move: keep every photo, but stop storing full-resolution copies on the device.

On iPhone

Settings → your name → iCloud → Photos → Optimize iPhone Storage.

With this on, Apple keeps your full-resolution originals in iCloud and leaves smaller, space-saving versions on the phone. Your library looks identical. It just weighs a fraction of what it did.

Now the caveat nobody prints: it does nothing if iCloud is full. There has to be room in iCloud for those originals to move into, and the free iCloud tier is 5 GB. If your camera roll is 60 GB and your iCloud plan is 5 GB, you haven’t enabled a storage-saving feature. You’ve enabled a setting that quietly fails.

On Android

Open Google Photos → profile picture → make sure Backup is on and has finished → then profile picture → Free up space on this device.

Google is unusually honest in its own docs about what this does. It removes only local copies of items already safely backed up, and, crucially, photos and videos fewer than 30 days old may be retained on your device. So if your last month was a holiday, the number you reclaim will come in lower than you expected. That isn’t a bug. It’s the documented behavior, and no competitor article mentions it.

The honest note

Cloud offloading is renting space, not creating it. Stop paying, or fill the plan, and the problem walks straight back through the door. It’s still the biggest lever you have, and you should absolutely pull it. Just don’t mistake it for a solution.

Treat those ranges as estimates, not promises. They depend entirely on how you use your phone.

Message attachments (start here)

Years of group chats, memes, and forwarded videos live inside your messaging apps. They’re not in your camera roll, so cleaning photos never touches them.

Downloaded media

Netflix downloads, Spotify offline albums, YouTube saved videos, podcast back catalogues. Pure re-downloadable weight, and most people forget it exists.

Check inside each app rather than in system settings, since the OS just reports them as “Documents & Data.”

Cache and browser data

Useful, but small. A few hundred megabytes to a couple of gigabytes, not the miracle some blogs imply.

Live Photos

Each Live Photo bundles a short video clip alongside the still, so it costs roughly double. Turning it off (Camera → tap the Live Photos icon, or Settings → Camera → Preserve Settings → Live Photo) won’t reclaim anything today, but it slows the rate at which the problem regrows. A tap on the brakes, not a fix.

The trap: empty Recently Deleted, or you freed nothing

This is the most consequential omission in every article on this subject, and it’s why people give up on deleting entirely.

When you delete a photo on iPhone, it doesn’t leave. It goes to Recently Deleted, where Apple holds it for 30 days so you can change your mind. For all 30 of those days, the file is still on your phone, still counted, still consuming the exact same bytes.

So the sequence goes: delete 3 GB of photos, check Settings, see no change, conclude that deleting photos “doesn’t do anything,” and never try again.

Fix it: Photos → Albums → Utilities → Recently Deleted → unlock with Face ID → Select → Delete All.

Google Photos does the same thing with a longer fuse: items sit in the trash and become unrecoverable once they’re more than 60 days old. Empty it from Google Photos → Library → Trash → Empty trash.

Now flip that around, because the 30-day window is a safety net, not a bug. It means deleting a photo on an iPhone is a reversible action for a month. Where the no-delete tricks run out

Add it up. Cloud offloading, message attachments, an app or two, some Netflix downloads, cache. Realistically 5 to 20 GB, and only once. Not every month.
