Optimize iPhone Storage Savings Calculator

Estimate how many GB Optimize iPhone Storage frees on the phone, how much of your library stays full-size in iCloud, and whether that pushes you into an iCloud+ upgrade. Uses 2026 US iCloud+ pricing.

Optimize iPhone Storage Savings Calculator

Your library

Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage, then Photos.

What is in your library?

Community measurements, not an Apple figure. Reported savings run 50 to 90%, so treat this as an estimate.

Device space

The "Available" figure in Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage.

iOS gets sluggish and updates start failing below about 5 GB free.

iCloud

Your iCloud plan today

One iPhone backup on its own often runs 5 GB or more.

Local space you free up
48.0 GB
at 80% reduction, on the device only
Photos kept on device 12.0 GB
Full-res GB living only in iCloud 48.0 GB
Free space after optimizing 53.0 GB
Still need to clear 0.0 GB

The freed GB and the iCloud-only GB are the same bytes seen from two sides. They leave the device and stay in the cloud, so the second figure is not extra savings on top of the first.

Your free space goal

Goal reached 53.0 GB free against a 20.0 GB goal.

What this does to your iCloud bill

iCloud storage this needs 65.0 GB
iCloud+ tier required 200 GB
Extra per month $2.99/mo
Extra per year $35.88/yr

Yes, upgrade to 200 GB.

Optimizing does not shrink this number. The full-resolution library has to fit in iCloud either way.

Delete instead

GB to clear to hit the goal with no optimizing
15.0 GB

Deleting is the only move that frees the device and shrinks iCloud at the same time.

Optimizing has a floor. Deleting does not.

Swipe44 turns the cleanup into a few minutes of swiping: right to keep, left to delete, one month at a time. Duplicates get grouped on your phone. Everything you mark goes out in one batch delete, and you get a tally of the space that came back. It works from thumbnails and never downloads iCloud originals, which matters if Optimize is already on.

How sensitive the estimate is

Library mix Reduction Kept on device Freed locally

Same library size, three plausible reduction rates. The spread is the honest error bar on any "Optimize saves X GB" claim.

What Optimize iPhone Storage does to your photos

The setting sits in Settings, then Photos, and it does nothing unless iCloud Photos is on. Apple's own description: full-resolution photos and videos live in iCloud, and "when needed", space-saving copies are kept on your device. Tap a photo, the original downloads on demand.

Two phrases in there do most of the work. "When needed" means iOS offloads when it feels like it: under storage pressure, on Wi-Fi, on power. The free space shows up over hours or days, not the second you flip the toggle. And "stored in iCloud" means the full-resolution library never gets any smaller. Optimizing is a device storage feature and nothing else. Your iCloud usage and your bill do not move.

Nothing gets deleted along the way, and nothing is lost if you turn it off. Switch back to Download and Keep Originals and iOS starts pulling the originals down again, which means finding room for the whole library on the phone.

How much space it typically frees

Apple publishes no percentage, so every number on this page comes from third-party measurements. They cluster in a wide band, 50 to 90%, and the spread is mostly about video. An optimized preview of a 1.5 GB 4K clip can come down to 50 to 100 MB, a cut of 93% or more, while a still photo shrinks nowhere near as hard. So video-heavy libraries optimize best, which is the same thing the Video Storage Calculator shows from the other side.

Library size75% (photo-heavy)80% (typical)90% (video-heavy)
25 GB18.8 GB freed, 6.3 GB kept20.0 GB freed, 5.0 GB kept22.5 GB freed, 2.5 GB kept
50 GB37.5 GB freed, 12.5 GB kept40.0 GB freed, 10.0 GB kept45.0 GB freed, 5.0 GB kept
100 GB75.0 GB freed, 25.0 GB kept80.0 GB freed, 20.0 GB kept90.0 GB freed, 10.0 GB kept
200 GB150.0 GB freed, 50.0 GB kept160.0 GB freed, 40.0 GB kept180.0 GB freed, 20.0 GB kept

The 80% default sits in the middle of the credible range. Reported cases include a 50 GB library settling at 5 to 10 GB resident, and a 140 GB video-heavy library at roughly 5 GB. Any single figure here is an estimate with a wide error bar, which is why the sensitivity table further up shows three rates instead of one.

The iCloud+ bill nobody mentions

Optimizing needs the whole library sitting in iCloud, so it can quietly hand you a subscription you did not have before. Once backups, Drive and Mail are counted, almost any library over about 5 GB blows past the free tier. From there the ladder looks like this at 2026 US pricing:

PlanCapacityPer monthPer year
Free5 GB$0.00$0.00
iCloud+ 50 GB50 GB$0.99$11.88
iCloud+ 200 GB200 GB$2.99$35.88
iCloud+ 2 TB2,048 GB$9.99$119.88
iCloud+ 6 TB6,144 GB$29.99$359.88
iCloud+ 12 TB12,288 GB$59.99$719.88

Apple bills monthly only, so the yearly figure is twelve times the monthly one. Watch the step from 200 GB to 2 TB: capacity goes up about ten times while the price goes up 3.3 times, so staying under the 200 GB ceiling is worth $84 a year. The upgrade verdict above is just the smallest tier that covers your library plus your other iCloud data, checked against the plan you are on now.

Optimize or clean up: which one you need

The decision is easier than it looks. Device full, iCloud fine? Optimize. iCloud full, or the bill climbing? Optimizing will not help at all, because the full-resolution library is what is filling the plan. Both at once? Optimize for the quick device win, then delete for the cloud side. Deleting is the only move that shrinks both.

What comes out is almost always the same stuff: near-identical burst runs, screenshots of things you dealt with months ago, videos nobody has watched twice. Dead weight on the phone, and dead weight on the bill.

That is the job Swipe44 does. You swipe through the camera roll, right to keep and left to delete, working from Recents, Random or one month at a time so it never turns into a single giant chore. Duplicates get hashed on the phone and grouped for review. Everything you mark piles up and goes in one batch behind one system confirmation, with a tally of the space you got back. It reads thumbnails and never pulls down iCloud-offloaded originals, which matters if Optimize is already on.

If the goal is still out of reach after both, the honest answer might be more storage on the next phone. The iPhone Storage Size Calculator and the Phone Storage Planner price that path out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about optimize iphone storage savings calculator

How much space does Optimize iPhone Storage save?

Usually 70 to 90 percent of your photo library's local footprint, though Apple has never published a figure. Third-party measurements put photo-heavy libraries around 70 to 85 percent and video-heavy libraries at 90 percent or more, since the optimized preview of a 1.5 GB 4K clip is only 50 to 100 MB. On a 60 GB library at 80 percent, that is roughly 48 GB back on the device.

Does Optimize iPhone Storage delete my photos?

No. It swaps the local copy for a smaller space-saving version and keeps the full-resolution original in iCloud. Nothing is deleted. Turning the setting back off does not delete anything either. It stops the swap and starts re-downloading originals.

Does optimizing reduce my iCloud storage?

No, and this is the part most guides skip. The full-resolution library still sits in iCloud at full size, so your iCloud usage does not move. Optimizing fixes a device storage problem and can hand you an iCloud billing one: at 2026 US pricing a library that overflows the free 5 GB pushes you to 50 GB ($0.99/mo), 200 GB ($2.99/mo) or 2 TB ($9.99/mo). The iCloud Storage Cost Calculator prices that out. Deleting photos is the only move that shrinks both sides.

Why has my free space not gone up yet?

Apple's wording is that space-saving copies are kept "when needed". iOS offloads originals gradually, mostly when the device is under storage pressure, and it wants Wi-Fi and power before it bothers. Expect the savings over hours or days, not the moment you flip the switch.

Why do my photos look blurry now?

You are looking at the device-sized copy while the full-resolution original comes down from iCloud. Give it a second on a decent connection and the sharp version loads. Offline, the optimized copy is all you get.

Do I need an internet connection to see my photos?

For browsing, no: the optimized copies are already on the device. For viewing, editing or exporting at full resolution, yes, because the original has to come down from iCloud first.

Can I turn Optimize iPhone Storage off without losing anything?

Yes. Switch to Download and Keep Originals in Settings, then Photos, and iOS starts pulling the full-resolution files back. The catch is space. You need room for the entire library on the phone again, which is your full library size, the number this calculator starts from. The Photo Storage Calculator works it out if you are not sure.

Is deleting photos better than optimizing them?

They fix different problems. Optimizing frees device space at no cost but leaves your iCloud bill exactly where it was. Deleting duplicates, screenshots and junk shots frees device space and shrinks iCloud usage, which can drop you a tier and save real money every month. Most people want both: optimize first, then clear out what should not be stored at all. The Duplicate Photo Space Calculator sizes up the duplicate half.
