Why the two costs are not the same shape

A storage upgrade is one payment. You hand over $200 at the checkout, you get a fixed amount of space, and the space dies with the phone. A cloud plan is a small payment that repeats forever. It follows you onto the next phone, and the one after that, and you can resize it up or down as your library changes. Comparing a lump sum to a subscription is the part everyone gets stuck on.

There are two honest ways to do it. The first is total cost over one phone's life: what you pay for the tier versus what the plan bills you across the years you keep the device. The second is cost per gigabyte, which strips out time and asks which purchase buys space more efficiently. The two measures often disagree, so the calculator shows both rather than picking a winner for you.

What a storage tier and a cloud plan actually cost in 2026

The tables above have the checked figures. On the hardware side, Apple charges $200 for every step across the iPhone 17 line, except the jump from 1 TB to 2 TB on the Pro, which costs $500. Google's Pixel 10 Pro is cheaper at the bottom, $100 for 128 GB to 256 GB and $120 for 256 GB to 512 GB. Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra is between them at $200 and $300 per step.

On the cloud side, iCloud+ runs $0.99, $2.99, $9.99, $29.99 and $59.99 a month for 50 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB and 12 TB, all billed monthly. Google One is $1.99, $2.99 and $9.99 a month for 100 GB, 200 GB and 2 TB, or $19.99, $29.99 and $99.99 paid yearly, about 16 percent less.

Per gigabyte, both ladders punish small amounts. On the cloud ladder the entry tier is the bad deal: 50 GB at $0.99 works out to roughly four times the per-GB price of 2 TB at $9.99. Hardware does the same thing on the first step, where $200 for 256 GB is $0.78 a gigabyte against $0.39 for the $200 jump from 512 GB to 1 TB. The very top tier then breaks the run of improvement: $500 for the last terabyte is $0.49 a gigabyte, a quarter more than the step below it. Reading your break-even month

Take the default case: a $200 upgrade against iCloud+ 200 GB at $2.99 a month. Divide $200 by $2.99, take the whole-number part (66) and add one. The subscription passes the upgrade in month 67, about five years and seven months in. Over a three-year hold the subscription is cheaper by $92.36, and over a six-year hold the upgrade is ahead.

A break-even that lands beyond your ownership period means the subscription wins for this phone and only this phone. Sell at year three and you never reach month 67, but you also carry the bill onto the next device, so across two phones the arithmetic flips. If the break-even lands inside your ownership period, buy the storage: you will still own the phone on the month the plan overtakes it.

Two things the numbers miss. Resale value favors the upgrade, since a higher-capacity phone sells for more and effectively refunds part of what you paid. Portability favors the subscription, because cloud storage covers your laptop, tablet and next phone at once, while a bigger phone covers exactly one device. Neither purchase is required if the library shrinks below the line.
