How Much Space Do 10,000 Photos Take? (2026 Numbers)

10,000 photos take about 25 GB as 12 MP HEIC, 50 GB as JPEG, and up to 750 GB as 48 MP ProRAW. Here's the math by format, plus how to shrink your total.

Ten thousand standard 12 MP iPhone photos in HEIC come to about 25 GB, at roughly 2.5 MB each. Shoot the same 10,000 pictures as JPEG and you’re at 50 GB. Shoot them in 48 MP ProRAW and you’re at 750 GB.

That’s a 30-fold spread, which is why every article that answers this question with a single flat “about 35 GB” is useless to you. The number depends almost entirely on two settings on your own phone.

What decides whether you land at 25 GB or 750 GB

Two variables do almost all the work here.

Megapixels. File size scales close to linearly with resolution at a fixed format. Double the megapixels, roughly double the bytes. In practice a 48 MP shot lands at two to four times the size of a 12 MP shot of the same scene, not always the clean fourfold that pixel counting predicts.

Format. HEIC (Apple’s flavor of HEIF) is about half the size of JPEG for the same picture. Apple’s own position is that HEIF and HEVC offer better compression than JPEG and H.264, using less space while preserving the same visual quality.

Then there’s ProRAW, which is in a different league. Apple documents ProRAW files as approximately 25 MB at 12 MP and approximately 75 MB at 48 MP, and describes them as 10 to 12 times larger than HEIF or JPEG. ProRAW uses the DNG format and keeps far more of the sensor’s original data, which is exactly why it’s big.

Most articles on this topic are stale on one point in particular: 12 MP is no longer the default. iPhone 15 and later default to 24 MP, and every rear camera on an iPhone 17 Pro is a 48 MP Fusion sensor. How to work out your own number in two minutes

Averages are for strangers. You can get your actual figure in about the time it takes to read this section.

1. Read it directly. On iPhone: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Photos. On Android: Settings → Storage. This is ground truth for what’s physically on the device right now.

2. Divide. Take that Photos figure in GB, multiply by 1,000 to get MB, then divide by your photo count. That’s your real average per photo, including all your bad habits.

Worked example: Photos shows 45 GB, and your library has 9,400 items. 45,000 MB ÷ 9,400 = about 4.8 MB per item. That’s a 24 MP HEIC library, or a 12 MP library with Live Photos on, and either way it means 10,000 more photos will cost you another 48 GB.

3. Check the two settings that matter. Settings → Camera → Formats. Are you on High Efficiency or Most Compatible? Is ProRAW on, and at 12 MP or 48 MP? Apple notes that HEIF Max and RAW Max go up to 48 MP, RAW 12 tops out at 12 MP, and standard HEIF offers up to 24 MP. Then check whether Live Photos is on, because it’s a bigger multiplier than most people expect.

Why your 10,000 photos are bigger than the average says

“10,000 photos” on your Settings screen isn’t 10,000 discrete pictures. It’s 10,000 assets, and several categories of asset carry more weight than a clean average predicts.

Live Photos

A Live Photo carries a video with it. Apple describes the feature as capturing motion and sound from before and after you press the shutter, which in practice means a still bundled with roughly three seconds of HEVC video.

That nearly doubles the per-asset size. If every one of your 10,000 photos is a Live Photo at 12 MP, you’re looking at about 48 GB rather than 25 GB. If roughly half your library is Live, call it 36 GB. Live Photos is on by default, so for most iPhone users this is the single biggest hidden multiplier. Near-duplicates and bursts

Nobody takes one photo of anything anymore. You take four attempts at the same shot and keep all four, at full size. Burst mode does the same thing at ten frames a second, so a two-second burst leaves twenty full-size files behind one thumbnail.

Screenshots and saved images

Screenshots are PNGs, and their size depends almost entirely on what was on screen. A mostly-white Messages thread compresses down to a few hundred KB, while a map, a game or an Instagram feed can hit 4 MB. On a modern iPhone that puts a screenshot somewhere between roughly 0.5 MB and 4 MB, which means it can be smaller or larger than one of your camera shots. Either way it breaks count-based estimates, because it pulls your average away from your camera’s real per-photo size while inflating your count. Video hiding in the photo count

If your “10,000 photos” number came from the Photos app rather than a filtered count, it probably includes videos. Video dominates everything else in a camera roll: a few minutes of 4K footage can outweigh several hundred stills. The video storage calculator handles that side separately. Will 10,000 photos fit on your phone or in the cloud?

This is the real question behind most searches for this number. Two things to get straight first.

Advertised space isn’t usable space. A 128 GB phone reports about 119 GB of capacity, because 128 billion bytes counted in binary units is 119 GiB and most tools label that as GB. Then iOS itself plus your apps take their cut. Plan on 60 to 80 GB actually free for your own stuff.

The cloud math is different. iCloud gives every Apple Account 5 GB free, so 10,000 photos never fits the free tier in any format. A 25 GB HEIC library needs the 50 GB plan; a 50 GB library needs 200 GB; a ProRAW library is a 2 TB conversation. Why the number in Settings never matches your calculation

You did the multiplication, you got 25 GB, and Settings says 31.8 GB. Or 6 GB. Both are normal, for different reasons.

Decimal GB versus binary GiB. Storage is sold and reported in decimal gigabytes, where 1 GB is 10⁹ bytes. Some tools report binary gibibytes instead, where 1 GiB is 2³⁰ bytes, or 1,073,741,824. That’s a 7% gap: 25 GB of files reads as about 23.3 GiB. It isn’t a rounding error or a bug, just two units wearing similar names.

One thumbnail can be several files. Live Photos, RAW+JPEG pairs, and edited photos with their originals all present as a single item in the grid while occupying multiple files on disk.

Optimize iPhone Storage. With this on, your device holds space-saving versions while the full-resolution originals live in iCloud. Your on-device Photos number can be a small fraction of your library’s true size. Caches counted against Photos. Thumbnail caches and analysis data get attributed to the Photos figure, inflating it slightly above the sum of your actual image files.

So there are genuinely two numbers: how big your library is, and how much of it is sitting on this particular device. Don’t compare one to the other and conclude something is broken.

How to shrink 10,000 photos without losing anything you want

Ordered by payoff per minute spent.

1. Switch Formats to High Efficiency. Settings → Camera → Formats. This roughly halves every future photo. It changes nothing retroactively, so it’s a decision about the next 10,000 photos, not this batch. Apple documents both sides of that switch, including the compatibility trade-off if you regularly move files to older software.

2. Turn ProRAW off as a default. Keep it for shots you’ll genuinely edit. At 10 to 12 times the size of HEIF, ProRAW as an always-on setting is the most expensive habit available to an iPhone owner.

4. Triage in small passes, not one marathon. Ten thousand photos won’t fit into a Sunday afternoon. Plan on a fortnight of short sessions, because the only way this ever gets finished is if each session is short enough that you’ll actually start it.
